PROGRAM OUTLINE   EXPECTATIONS FROM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Day I & 2 Previewing Text

  • Previewing topics hierarchy
  • Scoping out content for analysis
  • Learning to go beyond the facts (To learn to be ‘FLEXIBLE’)

Day 3 & 4 Saliency Determination Training

  • Process of determining the salient aspect of nonverbal as well and verbal information
  • Abstracting the connections between salient information to formulate ideas and congruent thoughts
  • Learning to determine saliency of the ‘procedures’ that need to be followed

Day 5 & 6 Training for Strategic Note Taking

  • Defining and describing concepts
  • Process of abstraction, condensation and consolidation of information
  • Effective word choice
  • Mapping information

Day 7 & 8 Organizational and Planning Training

  • Figure out setups & creating new set-ups
  • Developing strategic organization
  • Using daily planning sheets
  • Managing tasks using the concept of ‘Fixed/Floating times’

Day 9 & 10 Test Taking Strategies

  • Preparing mock tests and instilling self quizzing process
  • Developing rehearsal strategies to practice retrieval of information
  • Developing routines to allocate regular time for synthesizing newly learnt information
  • Error analysis and learning to Learn from mistakes

STRATEGY BINDER

Overview & suggestions for each student will be provided in a form of a Tool Kit that students can access all year-around. Parents need engage in on-going discussion regarding HOW TO process and work with the student to help them carryover the strategies to enhance the culture of learning.

In order to master these executive skills to learn to manage of high school responsibilities, the students need to:

A. Demonstrate academic independence using self administrative skills for which they need to:

  • Be fully attentive during classroom instructions, discussions as well as active teaching
  • Follow the content flow by understanding the topic and details as well as take notes
  • Write assignments down without being prompted and carry that information home ALONG with items necessary for completion of the work
  • Keep track of their overall performance to know the cumulative grade  
  • File notes and create a central organizational system

B. Demonstrate academic initiative using big-picture skills including:

  • think about application of information
  • evaluate work efficacy and performance accuracy
  • know how smaller grades from quizzes and tests count towards final grade in a subject
  • take advantage of ‘extra help’ if and when offered
  • work on developing academic reputation and understand implication of poor academic performance on learning and critical thinking

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS PROGRAM?

High School students who:

  • Tend to be underachievers as they do not know how to manage themselves or their time
  • Have problems organizing their paperwork, HW, and assignments or are unable to prepare for a test
  • Don’t know how to prioritize or sequence tasks or activities based on importance or time available
  • Depend on others to make task instructions explicit and need others to outline the execution of the task
  • Underestimate how complex a big-task or a project is going to be and how they need to break it down

Candidates:
High School Students
Participants:
4-5 Students per class
Program Timing:
July 25 - August 5 (Monday - Friday)
Homework: 2-Hrs per week & Must be done!
Material: Will be provided
Snacks: Water and snacks will be provided to the students
Cost:    $2,100 ($100/Hr.)
Parent Training: Thursday, August 4 @ 2-3 pm
