Writing is a highly complex executive
process; the impact of which on academics
is often underestimated. Apart from the
process of generating creative ideas, there
are very specific cognitive abilities that
allow a student to ‘produce’ a
written narrative. Effective writing skills
are expected to emerge in assignments where
the teacher asks student to analyze character
traits, identify themes, incorporate key
events in the plot, introduce conflict
and establish a point of view. Each grade
level teacher steps up the expectations
from her students in order to evaluate
writing.
This program will focus on fundamental
elements of writing using executive approach
of planning, sequencing and problem solving.
The main focus would be to hone on working
memory skills, developing knowledge of
structural elements of written language
by fine-tuning the word order as well
as word selection process (syntax and
semantics of language). Finally the process
of generating topic structures that highlight
use of written templates will be introduced.
